My Personal Journey:

My journey in language acquisition was shaped by two powerful experiences of “immersive” learning. I’ve had the privilege of learning two distinct languages—Spanish and Haitian Creole—both from significant time spent in their home countries. In both experiences, my initial “teachers” were my youngest hosts and siblings, at three years old, first Maria José in Colombia and later Jephte in Haiti. Through their patient and intuitive teaching, both became my playmates and my language guides.

Maria José and I would spend hours together, playing and speaking. She introduced me to the sounds of Spanish with a lighthearted spirit, allowing me to listen and repeat her words without fear of making mistakes. Jephte offered me the same experience in Haiti, with Haitian Creole. Through playing, he encouraged me to repeat phrases until they felt natural without making me feel self-conscious. In these moments, I learned the structure and sounds of each language and felt the freedom to engage and experiment, building confidence through speaking.

The Confidence of Speech
