Pillar 3 | Innovative Tech in Indigenous Language Revitalization at Languages 4
Languages 4 harnesses cutting-edge tech like Advanced Speech Recognition and Augmented Reality to make Indigenous language learning engaging and accessible.
Languages 4 is dedicated to Indigenous language reclamation and advancing language sovereignty by following the lead of communities to revitalize, protect, and sustain their ancestral languages. Language is more than words—it is knowledge, identity, and cultural continuity.
We stand in solidarity with global movements for language rights and land back, recognizing the historical injustices that led to language loss. Indigenous peoples must be at the forefront of their own language reclamation efforts, determining how their languages are taught, shared, and preserved.
Languages 4 provides scalable, accessible, and community-driven educational tools and technologies, ensuring that all language materials remain fully owned and controlled by the communities we serve. Our role is not to lead but to support, strengthen, and amplify Indigenous language revitalization.
Languages 4 was founded on the principle that Indigenous peoples must lead their own language reclamation. Our work began with the Wahta Mohawks in Ontario and has since expanded, always ensuring communities retain full ownership of their language resources.
Founder Tim O'Hagan transitioned from teaching English in Japan to working on educational software creation, landing on Indigenous language project development with the Chickasaw, Navajo, and Ojibwe Nations at Rosetta Stone, before launching Languages 4 to make language learning more affordable, scalable, and community driven.
Tim's sister, Lorelei, Director of Community Engagement, brings two decades of experience in relationship management and community organizing, along with a deep personal connection to language learning and their shared Indigenous heritage. Their great-great aunts were survivors of the Carlisle Indian Boarding School, and their grandmother, Bettie, was a registered member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Dakota Tribe. Their family's journey of reconnection fuels the mission of Languages 4.
